ELK MOUND, Wisconsin – The Dunn County Sheriff’s Office has issued an update on the SUV vs. train crash.
According to an updated press release from the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the vehicle, who was taken to the hospital after the crash, died there on December 23, 2024, as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver was identified as Gregory Nerbovig, 80, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
The collision occurred on December 12, 2024, at the intersection of Highway 12 and 970th Street near Elk Mound.
According to the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office’s initial press release about the crash, the investigation shows that the driver of the SUV failed to yield for the stop sign at the railroad crossing, resulting in a collision on the passenger side of the SUV with the eastbound train.
The SUV held three people. Mayo Helicopter flew the driver away from the scene. Two children were transported to the hospital by private vehicle.
