People who live in Maine should be aware of a new scam that uses the law. There is nothing these hackers won’t do to get your money.
Here is the most latest problem.
The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office is People in Maine are being warned about a new phone scam involving a caller who pretends to be a police officer or agent.
According to an article from WMTW, reports have come up of folks receiving calls from a man claiming to be “Detective Keith McCoy.”
Okay, I’ll give them points for having a cool fake detective name.
Sheriff Dale Lancaster says it looks like this scam is aimed at people who have been charged with sex crimes. The fake detective will call and demand money for what they say are fines, bail, or to get arrest charges dropped.
There is no detective in Somerset County named Keith McCoy, and Sheriff Lancaster wants you to know that police officers will never call you and ask for money.
A study from the Federal Trade Commission told people how to avoid scams and how to spot signs that someone is trying to steal your money. Being able to spot the signs makes it easier to stay away from their crime. You can check out the list here.
I can see how this could seem plausible, especially if you fly a lot and have had problems with the government.
But you should always be careful and look into it if someone calling you saying they are from the cops and asking for money. Don’t forget that police or agents will never call and demand money.
