West Delaware, Mount Vernon make history with outdoor volleyball in Iowa

On Tuesday evening, a high school volleyball match was played outside for the very first time in the state of Iowa.

A court that was constructed on top of the football field was used for the match between Mount Vernon, which was ranked first in Class 3A, and West Delaware, which was placed ninth.

As the first sanctioned prep game to be played outside, the rivals from the Wamac Conference East division made history by competing against one other.

After West Delaware stormed out to a 2-0 lead from the beginning of the match, Mount Vernon rebounded and won the final three sets and the match. The arena was overflowing with spectators.

As temperatures lingered around the middle of the seventies, there was just a tiny breeze, and there were no clouds in the sky, the weather conditions for the event were virtually perfect.

Before the evening began, Mount Vernon had triumphed in each of the previous four matches, including a victory in five sets that had occurred in September of last year.

In the previous season, Mount Vernon finished in second place at the state level with a record of 35-5, while West Delaware made it to the regional final with a record of 26-15.
