If you are receiving Social Security benefits and your check is low, you can do something about it. In the first place, you could apply for SSI (Supplemental Security Income). This is a federal payment for Americans with a low income and limited resources who are 65 years old, blind, or disabled.
For example, seniors 65 and older receive a $575 SSI payment. So it is an excellent supplement if you receive a lower-than-average Social Security payment in the United States.
Of course, the maximum amount for an individual is higher, at $697 in 2025, but reductions apply if you have other benefits. Similar to retirement benefits, SSDI benefits can be combined with Supplemental Security Income.
Social Security and spousal benefits can be combined
Many Americans are still unaware that they may be eligible for spousal benefits while receiving retirement benefits. When you reach the age of 62, you can receive up to half of your spouse’s retirement or SSDI benefit through Social Security.
If you care for a qualifying child under the age of 16, you may be eligible for spousal benefits. Benefits in the United States that can be combined with Social Security, such as SNAP benefits, are still available.
SNAP benefits can help retirees and SSDI recipients get money on an Electronic Benefits Transfer card to buy groceries. When you use Food Stamps, you can get food for less money at USDA-approved farmers’ markets and grocery stores.
Veterans benefits and Social Security
Another option is to combine Social Security with partial VA. Receiving partial Veterans Disability Compensation may not be enough; therefore, check to see if you also qualify for SSI or Social Security benefits.
Another thing to consider is whether your state allows you to receive both Social Security and unemployment benefits. If you have a low income, you can also look into TANF or WIC.
WIC is a Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Consider combining it with your SSI or SSDI payment. Check to see if you can get Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) while receiving other benefits.
