Two mid-Missouri sheriff's deputies were hurt during a gunfight with a suspect on Interstate 70

During a shootout early Monday morning on Interstate 70 east of Columbia, Missouri, two cops from the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office were shot.

At 3:35 a.m., a policeman from the sheriff’s office stopped a car that was coming from Texas. Soon after the stop, a second officer showed up to help the first deputy.

The suspect had more than one felony warrant from out of state, which officers found out during the traffic stop. They went to arrest the suspect.

At that point, deputies said the suspect had reportedly refused to be arrested and shots had been fired.

The gunfire hit both cops, and they were both taken to a nearby hospital. One deputy’s injuries were described as serious.

The other deputy was hurt, but his injuries are not life-threatening.

He was a 37-year-old man from Texas, and the sheriff’s office said he was declared dead at the scene.
