Two Maine cities are among the'most sinful' in the nation

‘Tis the season when folks pay more attention to whether you’ll be on the nice or bad list. According to WalletHub’s most recent statistics, Maine has two cities that will receive coal in their stockings.

WalletHub has released their “Most Sinful Cities in America” list for 2024

WalletHub generated statistics using 37 distinct parameters, ranging from the number of people who routinely drink, smoke, or gamble to more general data points such as crime per capita and drug use.

From there, WalletHub assigned a ranking to every city based on five major categories:

  • Anger and Hatred
  • Jealousy
  • Excesses and Vices
  • Greed
  • Lust

Based on those major categories, a pair of Maine cities rank amongst the “most sinful’ in the entire nation.

Lewiston is Deemed the “Most Sinful” City in All of Maine

According to data from WalletHub, Lewiston is the “most sinful” city in the state of Maine. That brings with it both good and bad news.

The bad news is that Lewiston ranks pretty high in two of WalletHub’s major categories. Lewiston ranked 58th in excesses and vices and 16th in greed.

What is the good news? Despite being the “most sinful” city in the state, Lewiston is ranked #127 out of 180 cities on the list.

Portland is the Other “Most Sinful” City in Maine

Portland, Maine is frequently featured on lists, with the majority of appearances centered on food, beer, or something else pleasant.

Portland’s ranking among the’most sinful’ cities in America is mostly due to avarice. WalletHub ranked Portland as one of the greediest cities in the US, citing gaming and a paucity of charity giving among the city’s rich citizens.

If you’re curious, Las Vegas will be America’s “most sinful” city in 2024. There’s a reason it’s called Sin City.
