President-elect Donald Trump revealed Tuesday night that he has chosen Ron Johnson to serve as US Ambassador to Mexico – but not Wisconsin’s US Senator Ron Johnson.
Trump stated in a statement that Ron Johnson formerly served as the United States Ambassador to El Salvador during Trump’s first term, as well as in the Central Intelligence Agency and the United States Army.
“Ron will work closely with our great Secretary of State Nominee, Marco Rubio, to promote our Nation’s security and prosperity through strong America First Foreign Policies,” Trump stated during a Truth Social appearance.
Of course, Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson is a third-term United States senator. His full name is Ronald Harold Johnson, and the nominee’s name is Ronald Douglas Johnson. Wisconsin’s Johnson is an ardent Trump supporter but has not been named to his administration.
The announcement caused some confusion Tuesday night, with some news sites stating Trump had chosen Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson or incorrectly showing photographs of the senator.
Some national reporters drew attention to the difference on X, the social media network that replaced Twitter.
And Wisconsin’s Johnson reminded viewers that “there are a few of us Ron Johnsons out there,” which included a former NFL player and a JCPenney CEO.
Some Wisconsin Republicans found the revelation amusing and welcomed Johnson’s continued service as the state’s senior senator.
However, Trump has appointed a former Wisconsin congressman to run the Department of Transportation: Sean Duffy. From 2011 until 2019, he represented Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District and co-hosted Fox Business’ “The Bottom Line.”
