One adolescent girl was murdered and another badly injured in what police characterized as a subway surfing incident in Queens on Sunday night.
According to NYPD police, the two girls were observed on top of the 7 train at 10:45 p.m. at Corona’s 111th Street station before falling between the carriages.
Police reported that one of the girls was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was transported to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition.
Police confirmed late Monday morning that the child who died was 13 years old, and the girl brought to Elmhurst Hospital was 14.
Last week, a 13-year-old kid died while reportedly subway surfing in Ridgewood, Queens. The deaths occur despite the fact that police have detained more people for subway surfing this year than the previous year, according to amNewYork.
At an MTA committee meeting Monday morning, New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow stated that he “can’t imagine what the family’s going through right now to lose a child in this manner.”
“We really want people to get the sense that this is a life-or-death matter,” Crichlow told reporters. “The repercussions are irreversible. The euphoric trip that ends with nothing but empty joy. “The families will have to deal with it indefinitely.”
According to transit officials, six people have died as a result of subway surfing events this year, up from five the previous year.
