The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Social Security both provide disability benefits. For example, the Agency finances SSDI payments. Of course, in order to receive these monthly payments, you must be eligible, as not all disabilities and workers meet all of the conditions.
When you apply, be sure your dependents also qualify for disability compensation. If you have paid enough payroll taxes to Social Security, your spouse or children may be eligible for SSDI. The VA Disability program’s processes and standards are very different.
SSDI and VA Disability Criteria Compared
For example, to be eligible for SSDI, your disability or sickness does not have to be related to military service, although it is required for Veterans Disability benefits. When applying for SSDI, your handicap must prevent you from working in SGA (Substantial Gainful Activity).
However, this is not a necessary condition for receiving VA Disability benefits. SSDI payments also require that your impairment endure at least a year (12 months) or result in death. This is not the situation for VA disability.
Remember that your employment history, age at which you file, and education all have an impact on your eligibility for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. VA Disability does not adhere to these standards.

Does SSDI and VA disability affect the amount and eligibility for the other program?
One of the similarities between the two Disability benefits is that the monthly payment amount and eligibility will be unaffected by the other program. So good news if you qualify for both.
Of course, because the SSI program is dependent on your earnings and resources, they will have an impact on how much you receive or if you are eligible for it. VA impairment also provides partial payments based on the severity of impairment, which is not the case with Social Security Disability.
“All or nothing disability payment” is the final disability criterion for SSDI. This does not apply to VA disability, however. If you qualify for both, you will need to apply separately. Also, check SSI eligibility.
