The USDA enables low-income Americans aged 18 to 54 with no children to obtain SNAP assistance for up to three months in a three-year period if they do not work. You can take steps to ensure that you continue to receive your monthly payments.
To get SNAP benefits for an extended period of time, simply follow the ABAWD requirements. All you have to do is work at least 80 hours per month to obtain Food Stamps as an ABAWD for more than three months. This is especially crucial if you are 53 or 54 years old because this rule applies to you beginning October 1, thus January could be your last month to get SNAP if you fulfill the requirements.
What can I do if I cannot find a job to continue receiving SNAP benefit payments?
Fortunately, ABAWD (Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents) have alternatives to working 80 hours each month. It’s possible that your state has exceptionally high unemployment rates or a lack of jobs.
So, you could take part in an 80-hour labor program per month. For example, the USDA promotes SNAP Employment and Training. If the Food Stamps office approves your application, you may be qualified for other local, state, or federal job programs.
Another option is to combine job and training. In this way, you can work 40 hours and receive 40 hours of training. As a result, it may be easier to get work for a few hours. Participating in workfare is the USDA’s last recommendation.
Who is excused from the SNAP ABAWD work requirement and time limit?
Keep in mind that this law only applies to people aged 18 to 54 who do not have any children and do not qualify for an exemption. Some folks have a qualifying impairment and do not need to meet this SNAP work requirement.
If you are pregnant, you do not have to complete this work requirement. Of course, having someone under 18 exempts you. Some persons are simply excused from the general labor restrictions, therefore they are not required to meet this particular condition.
