Shell Casing, Blood Drops Land Hempstead Getaway Driver In Jail For Killing Of 24-Year-Old

Khamari Elie, 20, of Hempstead, was sentenced to 17 years to life in prison in Nassau County Court on Wednesday, December 11, for his role in the shooting death of Kyle Midtlyng.

Prosecutors claim Elie and three co-defendants lured Midtlyng to a Uniondale home on Alexander Avenue on the night of November 10, 2021, under the premise of buying marijuana.

Elie drove the group to the spot, where co-defendant Kyle Colthirst entered Midtlyng’s vehicle and committed the heist. A scuffle broke out, and Colthirst shot Midtlyng in the right side, piercing his lungs and aorta.

Nassau County Police discovered Midtlyng’s body in the road. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Detectives discovered a bullet casing in the passenger floorboard of Midtlyng’s vehicle, as well as blood drops on the sidewalk of neighboring Lee Road that matched Colthirst’s DNA.

Colthirst, who was wearing an electronic monitoring device at the time, was found guilty at trial and sentenced in April to 25 years to life in jail.

Tariq Pitaud, another co-defendant, was sentenced to 17 years in jail in November after being found guilty of attempted robbery and possession of firearms.

“Khamari Elie and his friends lured Kyle Midtlyng to Uniondale to rob him, contributing to the young man’s tragic and senseless death,” stated Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “While Mr. Elie did not pull the trigger, today’s sentence reflects the gravity of his actions.”

In September, Elie pled guilty to 12 crimes, including second-degree murder and attempted robbery.

Tyrel Cason Jr., 22, of South Farmingdale, is the fourth co-defendant who has yet to face trial.
