Serious collision closes Gateway Drive on Saginaw Hill in south Joplin

SAGINAW, Missouri — Around 3:30 p.m. Friday, a significant crash with rollover on Saginaw Hill/Gateway. Dr. notified Newton County Central Communications E-911.

Newton County Deputies, as well as NCAD, responded to the Redings Mill fire. Joplin Fire Department responded since it was near to the jurisdiction boundary. Missouri State Highway Patrol was notified.

The two-vehicle accident occurred near the entrance to Wildwood Neighborhood but did not involve any vehicles turning.

Sgt K. Sanders of Troop D zone Newton/McDonald tells KOAM’s Shannon Becker that a white Chevy Aveo was going north on Gateway Dr. when it crossed the center line and collided with a white minivan. The Aveo then veered off the east side of the road and overturned down a steep hillside. It was halted by some massive trees.

We’re told it took around 20 minutes to get the adult male driver out of the Aveo. He was still interacting with EMS and Fire, but his injuries were significant. Newton County Ambulance took him to Mercy Joplin with Priority 1 lights and sirens.

The driver of the minivan remained at the site and was not hurt.

Chuck’s Towing was called in to remove both automobiles and debris from the crash scene.

The street was cleared in around 90 minutes. It was fully shut down in both directions for around 45 minutes.
