JOPLIN, Mo. – President Biden commuted 37 death sentences, including Shannon Agofsky, 53, formerly of McDonald County, Missouri.
He was convicted of kidnapping banker Dan Short in 1989 from his house in Benton County, Arkansas. He and his brother, Joe Agofsky, forced Short to open the State Bank of Noel safe — taking $70,000 — then dumping Short, chained to a chair still alive, into Grand Lake.
Shannon Agofsky was sentenced in 1992 to life in prison along with his accomplice brother. Shannon later killed an inmate while jailed in Texas and received the death penalty. Joe died in captivity in 2013.
Shannon Agofsky will serve a life sentence without parole for the death of an inmate.
Agofsky tops the full list of the 37 death row inmates who had their sentences reduced to life.
He is currently jailed at the Federal Prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.
