DOVER-FOXCROFT, ME — Law enforcement officers in Maine are warning drivers about slick roads after a storm brought freezing rain, sleet, and snow to areas of the state on Tuesday.
According to the Dover-Foxcroft Police Department, many crashes occurred in Piscataquis County before 3 p.m.
“The temperature is quickly dropping, and the roads are wet, resulting in icy conditions,” police stated in a Facebook post. “Please use caution if you are traveling on the roadways.”
Earlier in the day, the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office advised drivers to use caution as roadways in western Maine were extremely slick.
Throughout the first half of the day, a winter weather advisory was issued for all of Oxford and Franklin counties, as well as central Somerset County and Cumberland County’s inner highlands. The system is expected to exit the region by Tuesday night.
According to INRIX, a transportation data and intelligence firm, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving is one of the worst times to travel by automobile before the holiday.
The expected travel time from Boston to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, via I-95 North is approximately 3:45 p.m. Tuesday takes 2 hours and 35 minutes, more than double the average travel time.
