A 49-year-old straphanger who was sneaking a smoke between subway cars was crushed to death after falling onto the tracks on the Upper East Side, according to cops and sources.

According to sources and police, the man was puffing away when he tumbled on the tracks and fell under the northbound 6 train near the 77th Street and Sixth Avenue station around 10 p.m. Christmas night on Wednesday.

According to the NYPD, medics discovered him dead beneath the train in the tunnel connecting 68th and 77th streets.

The Christmas tragedy caused a delay in subway service.

Cops withheld his identity until his family was notified.
