Maine City Listed as One of the Best for People With Disabilities

A recent report has named this city in our Pine Tree State as one of the best for accommodating people with disabilities.

Everyone can live easier lives in cities that are easy for people with disabilities to get around in safely. It also helps people feel like they belong, so everyone can enjoy public places, businesses, and events.

Plus, making a place easier to get to helps the economy by bringing in more visitors and residents with different needs.

So, who is responsible for evaluating cities based on their support for people with disabilities?

WalletHub’s 2024 rankings for the ‘Best & Worst Cities for People with Disabilities’ evaluated 182 cities based on three main dimensions: Money, Health Care, and Quality of Life. They gave each city a grade on a 100-point scale based on 33 measures, such as the number of doctors per 1,000 people, the number of disabled workers, and how accessible buildings were.

The rankings by WalletHub were based on a weighted average of key metrics.

The scores for each city were found by taking the weighted average of these factors, taking into account the population number to make sure that small differences weren’t overemphasized. Also, only the core parts of cities were looked at; the surrounding metro areas were left out.

With that in mind, which city in Maine is being recognized for excelling in this area?

Lewiston ranked 19th overall on WalletHub’s 2024 list of the ‘Best & Worst Cities for People with Disabilities.’ The city also earned an impressive 5th place for its ‘Health Care Rank.’ In comparison, Maine’s largest city, Portland, ranked 47th overall on the same list. WalletHub’s rankings emphasize Lewiston’s strong healthcare resources for people with disabilities.
