Long Island superintendent charged in DUI collision with a motorcyclist

The superintendent  of a Long Island school district was detained on Sunday night and charged with drunk driving in a major incident in Suffolk County.

Michael Hynes, 53, was driving near Sayville when he tried a left turn and collided with a motorcycle, according to Newsday.

The rider, 63-year-old Alberto Fernandez, received significant injuries and was sent to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment, Patch reports.

Three weeks ago, Hynes stated that he would leave as superintendent of the Port Washington Union Free School District, effective December 13. He stated that he was given a “rare opportunity to work in the private education sector.”

However, on Sunday night, Hynes was driving a 2019 Honda Civic northbound on Railroad Ave. in Sayville when he attempted to turn left onto Depot St., colliding with Fernandez, who was heading southbound, according to police.

Newsday reported that Hynes sustained minor injuries and was taken to the same hospital. His arraignment was set for Monday at First District Court in Central Islip.

The wreck was one of two major drunk-driving accidents in Suffolk County on Sunday night. According to authorities, a drunken woman smashed into a boat at the nearby marina, causing four vessels to catch fire.
