A Hicksville teenager who was released on no bail in October after being charged with possessing stolen property was caught again last week after leaving a Hicksville home with the keys to what police claim was a stolen car.
Nassau County detectives stationed in undercover cars on Elliot Drive observed Jerrell Colon, 18, come up to the allegedly stolen 2018 Honda Accord parked outside, according to the Felony Complaint filed in connection with the accusations, and unlock the door.
At 3:15pm, Nassau County cops “apprehended” Colon as he was about to enter. Police believe Colon has the keys to the Honda.
According to court documents, the car was reported stolen from a property on Bloomingdale Road in Levittown, which is less than a half-mile away.
That is not all.
Judge Veronica Irwin had just released Colon with restrictions, but no bail, following his arrest on October 17 for Possession of Stolen Property. The D Felony case remains open.
After transporting Colon back to the 8th Precinct for processing, police claim a routine inventory of the defendant’s personal items revealed two (2) Citibank checks — #664 and #681 — in his pocket.
Both checks were allegedly written out to him, “Jerrell Colon,” and signed — ready to deposit, according to police.
According to authorities, each check was written for $8,298.24. The grand alleged total is $16,596.48.
Detectives continued their investigation by contacting the individual who owned the allegedly stolen car and asking him about the checks. Police said the man claimed his checkbook was in the car when it was reportedly stolen. He further stated that he did not sign or fill out those checks, according to the Felony Complaint.
Not one of the signed checks had been cashed yet. Nonetheless, because they were prepared and signed without authorization, owning them was illegal. Attempted Grand Larceny, an E Felony.
Teenager Jerrell Colon, who lives near the street where he was arrested, was arraigned the following day, November 15, 2024.
He pleaded not guilty to nine felonies, including three counts of criminal possession of stolen property (the allegedly stolen car and two checks), two counts of forged instrument (for the two “unauthorized” checks), two counts of attempted grant larceny, and two counts of attempted ID theft.
Judge Geoffrey Prime granted Colon conditional release without bail.
Colon is scheduled to return to the Mineola Courthouse on December 9. He is represented by the Legal Aid Society.
