The Iowa Utilities Commission (IUC) has given Summit Carbon Solutions permission to build the dangerous liquid pipeline they want to run across Iowa.
This is the company’s first permit for its “main line” underground carbon capture pipeline. It includes a branch that starts at the Homeland Energy Solutions ethanol plant and goes to New Hampton.
After going through Chickasaw and Floyd counties to the west, the pipeline would meet with the Golden Grain Energy ethanol plant near Mason City. It would then go through Cerro Gordo, Hancock, and Kossuth counties.
At the moment, the IUC is having public information sessions about a separate permit application by Summit to add ethanol plants that were previously connected to the Navigator CO2 Ventures carbon pipeline.
That application was withdrawn last October. In this list, Valero Renewables is close to Charles City and Lakota, Absolute Energy is close to St. Ansgar, and Poet Bioprocessing is close to Shell Rock, Fairbank, and Hanlontown.
The IUC will hold public information talks across north and northeast Iowa over the next week. The first meeting will be on Monday, September 9, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion in Hazleton in Buchanan County.
On Tuesday, September 10, the IUC and Summit representatives will be in Fayette County from noon to two p.m. at the Oelwein Coliseum in Oelwein and then in Bremer County from six to eight p.m. at The Center Hall in Waverly.
The Butler County meeting will be at the Community Center in Greene from noon to two p.m. on September 11. The Floyd County meeting will be at the Swartzrock Community Center on the Floyd County Fairgrounds from six p.m. to eight p.m.
In Mitchell and Worth counties on September 12, more public information meetings will be held. On September 13, Hancock County will do the same, and next Monday, September 16, Kossuth County will do the same.
