The Social Security Administration has already disbursed the year’s final Social Security payments. However, some SSI recipients received their increased checks, including the 2.5% COLA increase, on New Year’s Eve.
The agency sends over 73 million payments to Social Security beneficiaries each month. This includes retired employees, survivors, and recipients of Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance.
The government distributes benefits to retirees on a timetable based on their date of birth and the type of benefits they receive.
The SSI program paid beneficiaries on December 31st due to the holiday on January 1st
This birthday-based timetable excludes employees who began receiving retirement benefits before May 1997. No matter what day they were born, they will receive their benefits on the third of the month.
The SSI program typically delivers monthly benefits to eligible beneficiaries on the first of each month. Individuals who receive both Social Security and SSI payments are paid Social Security on their birth date and SSI on the first of each month.
Finally, keep in mind that the fourth Wednesday of each month is usually the last day of payment.
It’s possible that some receivers received one on Tuesday, December 31. The Social Security Administration will release January 2025 payments on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, rather than January 1, 2025, due to New Year’s Day being a federal holiday.
It is important to remember that when the regular delivery date falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the SSA policy includes an advance payment to ensure that beneficiaries receive their cash as soon as possible. Furthermore, SSI beneficiaries will not be paid again in January 2025 because their benefits have already been advanced.
The payment sent on December 31 already includes the 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, so it covers the benefit for the first month of the new year.
![It is now official – SSI confirms that those who received this payment on December 31st will not be paid in January for this reason.](https://assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com/hub/i/r/2023/11/15/39471964-a5b5-4b2b-8868-322b6380412d/thumbnail/1200x630/c0ad0792bf7a4c010a97da2960928857/gettyimages-178491316.jpg?v=fa9977353833f46f40b07abcd9d5240b)
Starting in 2025, all Social Security benefits will increase by 2.5 percent due to the COLA, which aligns payments with inflation and protects beneficiaries’ purchasing power from declining.
Simply add 2.5% to your current benefit to determine how much you will receive as a result of the COLA increase. Beginning with January payments, the increase will be applied automatically.
How much money will SSI beneficiaries receive in their 2025 checks?
The Social Security Administration estimates that beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income program will receive an average of $715 per month with the new cost of living adjustment (COLA).
Individual applicants will also receive up to $967, representing a $24 increase. Couples, on the other hand, will receive an additional $35 in their paychecks, bringing their total monthly income to $1,450. Finally, individuals and couples who meet the essential person (EP) criteria will be eligible for an additional $484 payment in 2025.
