Iowa State Auditor discusses statewide nursing home crisis

It’s KCAU in ONAWA, Iowa. On Tuesday, Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand talked to people in Monona County about their problems with the present government in Iowa.

People in the area wanted to know what was happening with their tax money, especially since there had been floods. Sand said that people could call the office of the Iowa Auditor of State if they were worried about how money was being spent.

Sand also talked about what’s wrong with Iowa’s nursing homes. He said he had heard terrible things and wants the government to know about it so they can do more checks and help with the hiring shortage.

“This is Iowa’s elderly population that is most at risk, and we haven’t had enough staff,” Sand said. “We’re 46th in the country.” I hope that the number of checks will go up in the future; it’s been pretty bad for the past few years.

The people who work in care homes all agree that there are not enough staff and that everyone has to step in when needed. When people move from job to job, there is a lot of home change in an area like Sergeant Bluff that is in high demand. At Embassy Rehab and Care Center, they want to slow down the high turnover.

An administrator named Billijean Moerman said, “We do have a lot of sales and bonuses.” “To keep our staff, we do everything we can to make them feel good.” I don’t think our turnover is that bad most of the time.

To make room for training new people, the present staff has to be able to do everything. Moerman said that when it comes to interviews, the people in charge try to get people in right away to make them feel like they are more wanted.
