When you read the news, you probably thought, “Wow, Iowa.” You should cut down on your drinking because it’s making you look bad.
You’re not right.
Not about Iowa making a fool of itself, because I’m sure that does happen. If you think that Iowa is Illinois’s partner with 41 of the 50 drunkest counties in the US, you’d be wrong. Let me give you a small hint about which state we’re talking about before you start making fun of Illinois’s neighbors to the east, west, and south:
This state wants to make its own national cocktail, which is something no other state has done or even thought about.
By Almost Unanimous Consensus, Wisconsin Is The Drunkest State In America, But Another Illinois Next-Door-Neighbor Comes In At Number-Two
Study after study shows that Wisconsin is the place where people drink the most alcohol overall. A report from 247WallSt.com says that 25.2% of adults in Wisconsin drink a lot, which is 6% more than the national rate. 35% of fatal car accidents are caused by drunk driving, which is 9% more than the national rate.
An interesting fact is that 24.9% of people in Iowa, just a shade below Wisconsin, drink too much. This puts them in second place.
We’re doing better (or worse, based on how much you drink) than at least two of our neighboring states here in Illinois. Twenty-two percent of people in Illinois (#9) are very drunk, making it the ninth most drunk state.
The Study Of The Drunkest States In America Also Points Out That 82% Of The Nation’s 50 Drunkest Counties Just Happen To Be Behind The Cheddar Curtain
You might think that all 41 of those Wisconsin counties drink about the same amount, but a piece at Mashed.com says that there is one county that drinks more than all of them combined.
That county is Outagamie County, which is in the northeast of the state and has Appleton as its county seat. 31% of people there binge drink or drink heavily, which is higher than the national average of 19.8%.
It’s Battle of the Beverages
What are the drinks that each state is known for? Stacker looked at news stories, food profiles, official state websites, and historical reports that connect different drinks to different states across the country. The majority ruled in states where there were several drinks in the race.
