Even though the tax rates may not have changed, some homes’ assessed values have gone up by as much as 60% since 2019.
This can make the annual bill hundreds or even thousands of dollars higher.
Since many homes now sell for much more than their town assessment value, many towns have had to reevaluate their tax assessments.
This is because the cost of giving municipal services has also gone up with inflation.
The amount of property taxes that people in Maine have to pay is the highest in the country, according to the website WalletHub. Each year, nearly 4.9% of people’s income is taxed on land.
