EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – For the Proceeds Against Cancer game in Madison on October 30, the men’s basketball teams from UW-Madison and UW-River Falls will share the court.
Greg Gard, the head coach of the Badgers’ men’s basketball team, started Garding Against Cancer as a way to help raise money for cancer research and patient care in Wisconsin.
There will be a fundraiser at UW-River Falls next Tuesday, October 1st. Gard’s father died of cancer eight years ago. He says that GAC is a project that is close to his heart and has already raised $9 million for his family.
“Being able to serve and give back in more ways than just basketball games and x’s and o’s is important. Having a platform like mine, where I can reach people all over the state with my story, is even more so.” Gard says, “I think as we’ve traveled all over the state for the last eight years telling my story with my dad—my mom beat breast cancer a few years ago—I hear so many other people’s stories who are going through the same things.”
The money raised will help fund new studies at the UW Health Carbone Cancer Center and at The Free Clinic of Pierce and St. Croix, Rhino’s Foundation, and the Tissue and Cellular Innovation Center in River Falls.
Hello Wisconsin’s Bob Gallaher will be the Master of Ceremonies for next week’s event. Tickets are still available. For more information, go to GARDINGAGAINSTCANCER.ORG
