An important problem was brought to light by a study from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP): the Social Security Administration (SSA) is having a major service crisis.

Why are these Social Security delays happening?

Inflation has not been taken into account in the SSA’s budget for a few years, the study says. This is the main cause of these problems. The budget for the agency was cut by 9.2% from 2018 to 2023. This caused the level of service to go down significantly.
The SSA also has to deal with old ways of doing things in the office and a technology system that needs to be updated right away. That’s why people now have to wait a lot longer to do even the easiest things, like fixing payment mistakes.
Sweeney said, “People can’t afford to wait this long.” “People shouldn’t have to spend hours on the phone or wait months for an answer when they need help, whether it’s to fix a problem with their pension or apply for disability benefits.”
A case that highlights the problem
The story of Peter Eisenstadt, who lives in Florida, shows how this problem works. Because of a mistake, Peter had to wait two years for the SSA to fix his funds.
At that time, he was getting $75 less a month than he was supposed to. Even though this amount doesn’t seem like much, it added up to $700 to $800 a year, which is a big loss for someone who is on a fixed income.
Peter talked about how he called a lot of times and sat on hold for hours, only to have the line go dead just as he thought he was going to finally talk to someone. Ultimately, it was his senator, Rick Scott, who stepped in to speed things up and solve the problem. “They put you on hold for hours, and just when you think you’ll get to talk to someone, the call goes off.” “It’s really annoying,” Peter said.
The solution lies with Congress
It is clear to Bill Sweeney what needs to happen: more money needs to be given. The SSA would need at least an extra $1.8 billion over the next three years, according to the AARP study, to fix the delays and cut down on the huge number of claims that are still being processed. If the budget isn’t raised, the pile of claims could reach over 1.5 million, and people could have to wait for years.
Sweeney said, “We’re pushing Congress and the administration to understand just how bad things are.” “It is very important that Social Security gets the money it needs to improve services and that that money is used wisely to make sure that people get the care and attention they need.”

Because of this crisis, AARP is telling Social Security beneficiaries to use the website’s online tools as much as they can. Of course, a lot of people would rather talk to a real person, but using online services might help ease the stress of long phone lines.
