OAKLAND, Maine – The Messalonskee High School community is mourning the death of a student who died only days before Christmas, according to an email received by WMTW.

In an email sent Friday morning, Regional School Unit 18 Superintendent Carl Gartley informed the school community that a Messalonskee High student had died.

Gartley stated that he was unable to provide the student’s identity owing to an ongoing police inquiry.

“I am writing to you with a heavy heart to share the tragic news of the passing of one of our high school students,” Gartley stated in the email he sent. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

A representative for the Maine Department of Public Safety stated that the Maine State Police were investigating an incident in Sidney, but did not specify if the student’s death was related to the investigation.

WMTW, dispatched a team to Sidney, where they discovered many police cruisers and an MSP Evidence Response Team vehicle outside a property near the Augusta line.
