At about 6:20 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, the accident happened on Coes Neck Road in Baldwin.
Nassau County Police say a cargo truck was driving near Notre Dame Court when it hit a 44-year-old man walking on the shoulder as it swerved to miss a car backing into the road.
Police say the victim had serious head injuries and was declared dead by a Nassau County Police medic. His name had not been made public by Friday evening.
The truck driver, who is 59 years old, stayed at the scene.
The event is being looked into by the police.
