You will undoubtedly witness a variety of strange things if you spend enough time in the Maine woods. Those stories are a lot of fun to read or hear, whether you’re reading your morning paper or sitting around the campfire.
Reader Chris Greeley shared a story from his father, which is the source of today’s strange tale from the Maine woods.
“As a veteran of the Army who served during the ‘Korean conflict,’ he never engaged in hunting or dealt with firearms after returning to Maine,” Greeley wrote.
But when they spotted a nice buck, he was out with a friend who WAS deer hunting (I suppose they were just going with him for company). The mature male deer, with a good rack, was shot and dropped by my dad’s friend, who was carrying a.30-30.
He almost immediately told my dad that he planned to get it mounted because he was so amazed by the quantity of points on its antlers. To see how his prized Winchester rifle may seem as a “rifle rack” on his living room wall, he walked up to the buck and set it atop its antlers.
The deer “came to” and fled as the two took a step back to appreciate my dad’s friend’s achievement … with the pistol. The firearm and the buck were never seen again.
Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of strange tales, such as one about a beaver that steals rifles and another that is quite similar to the one Greeley tells here.
Even if we’ll never have hard evidence that the tale unfolded precisely as it is described here, I suppose it’s still worth telling. Put this one in the file: “Well, it might have occurred.”
