After the 2025 COLA boost, people who get SSDI could get this raise from Social Security

After the 2025 COLA boost, people who get SSDI could get this raise from Social Security

People who get SSDI usually get about $1,539 a month. That’s the most recent number the Social Security Administration has given out as of August 2024. Millions of people in the US who get benefits want a COLA raise. But will it be possible?

All signs point to a smaller COLA raise for everyone who gets Social Security so far. Because of this, you should expect a smaller boost than in 2024. Keep in mind that the percentage rise is the same for people who receive SSI, SSDI, and retirees.

Latest projection for the 2025 COLA affecting SSDI recipients

The Senior Citizens League says that the COLA could go up by 2.5%. The last prediction was higher than this one, which was made last month. So, it keeps going down as inflation goes down.

So, starting in January 2025, people who get SSDI might get some extra money. Remember that benefits won’t go up until next year, even though it will be announced next month.

The January payment will only be sent to people who get SSI on December 31, 2024, because January 1 is a Government holiday. Additionally, SSDI will be paid on the following dates in January:

  • Disability Insurance payment on January 3, 2025: on SSI and SSDI at the same time or recipients who got benefits before May 1997
  • Disability Insurance payment on January 8, 15, and 22: birthdays from 1-10, 11-20, or 21-31 respectively

How much may SSDI recipients get after the Social Security COLA increase?

This will depend on how much money you get from Disability Insurance. It will look like there was a bigger rise if it is bigger. Say you normally get $1,539 a month, that amount could grow to about $1,577.

That means people who get Social Security Disability Insurance might get an extra $38. That amount will go up by about $461 in a year. So, even though it’s low, it’s a great help.

Some people who just got a $1,000 SSDI payment may get about $1,025. After the 2025 COLA, your benefit would go up to $512 if it was $500.
