A lady is facing various animal cruelty charges after the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office reported that 60 dead animals were removed from a San Leon property.

Julia Szebehely, 63, has been charged with ten counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals and one act of cruelty to livestock. Her bond was set at $16,500.

The sheriff’s office stated that they received the first call regarding the incident on September 7, when they responded to the 800 block of 29th Street in San Leon. They were assisting Galveston County Health District Animal Services, who had reported several dead cats on the site.

Deputies discovered the property and residence in “deplorable” condition. An emaciated horse was also discovered at the back of the property.

“The Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) responded to assist with the entire investigation, seizing the horse and two dead cat carcasses. The sheriff’s office reported that 16 cat carcasses were removed from the property, along with the capture of four live cats.

On September 17, a follow-up inquiry uncovered and analyzed 42 animal carcasses on the premises.

“During the investigation, 60 deceased animals were removed from the property. The sheriff’s office stated that the majority of the deceased animals were found inside locked kennels, crates, and traps.

The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office was informed, and charges were filed against Szebehely.

She was apprehended by the Sheriff’s Office Warrant Division. She’s currently out on bond.
