A person died after jumping from the Penobscot Narrows Bridge

A guy died Saturday morning after jumping off the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.

An official from the Hancock Regional Communications Center certified the death as a suicide.

The Orland Fire Department stated in a Facebook post that it was dispatched shortly after 5 a.m. for a bridge incident involving a rescue boat that resulted in a successful recovery effort.

The state has repeatedly postponed plans to erect fencing on the bridge to deter people from jumping off it, which spans the Penobscot River from Prospect to Verona Island and sits 135 feet above the water.

As of early November, the state was evaluating how wind would influence the fence.

In 2015, the state installed suicide hotline phones at either end of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, in the municipalities of Verona Island and Prospect, however the phones were often reported to be inoperable. Mental health doctors have questioned the effectiveness of such phones, even when they function well.
