A Minnesota man shot and killed his pregnant ex during a court-ordered visit, according to officials.

Damara Alexis Kirkland, 35, was discovered dead in her St. Paul home on Saturday, Oct. 19, after law enforcement responded to reports of shooting in the area. Mychel Stowers, 36, her soon-to-be ex-husband, allegedly paid her a visit just before.

Kirkland was 2 months pregnant at the time. A note addressed to Stowers was discovered in her mailbox, according to a statement of probable cause obtained by 12 News.

Stowers is accused with two charges of second-degree murder.

Stowers was granted parole earlier this year, in March, after serving a second-degree murder sentence for shooting and killing a man in 2008. Though he was residing in a halfway house at the time, he was granted permission to visit his ex-wife, from whom he filed for divorce in June of this year.

The divorce had not yet been finalized when the murder occurred, according to court records acquired by 12 News.

Following Kirkland’s death, law police received reports of a nearby carjacking in which a guy matching Stowers’ description shot at two persons as they stopped their car to put away trash, striking one in the femur before fleeing the scene. The assailant then returned and stole the vehicle.

A search for Stowers began. Later that day, Stowers reportedly called the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office. He identified himself to the employee who took his call, telling them that he had shot someone and wanted to turn himself in.

Stowers, on the other hand, did not appear at the Sheriff’s Office and is still missing. On Thursday, the stolen vehicle was discovered in a parking lot.
