Stephen King, a writer from Maine, is a true Mainer, which is one of my favorite things about him despite his fame and celebrity.
Thirty-five years ago, I was at a basketball game in the bleachers at my college in Bangor, and King was sitting two rows behind me, having a great time. He blended in with all the other Mainers, so if you weren’t looking closely, you might not have even noticed him. Naturally, I was enamored with him, but I kept my mouth shut and let him to watch the game.
Even though he spends his time in Florida in the home he acquired in 2001, having transformed his historic Bangor home into an archive for King’s work and as a retreat for writers, he always finds time to come home to Maine. What better time to visit home than during the Fryeburg Fair?
Many saw King strolling around the grounds of Maine’s largest agricultural fair, taking in the delectable fair fare, of course. This picture of Stephen King eating a sausage sandwich was taken by Dave Lavasseur and uploaded to the Fryeburg Fair’s Facebook page on Friday morning.
The Fryeburg Fair in 2025 will mark a significant milestone. It will be their 175th year. Using a calculator, I quickly calculated the inaugural Fryeburg Fair took place in 1850. Stephen might return for the festivities.
