Alabama – A 43-year-old man named J. Stephens is facing serious legal consequences after lying to be the father of a 15-year-old girl in order to get her kicked out of school and do an inappropriate “act.” The crime happened on September 18, and Stephens is now facing serious charges, such as rape, traveling to meet a child for sex, and luring a kid into a vehicle or house.
The sheriff’s office says Stephens set up a plan to pick up the teen from her Alabama school by telling the staff that he was the girl’s father and that she needed to be checked out early. The girl was seen getting into Stephens’s black Dodge truck around 9 a.m. and coming back around 2 p.m., which means she was gone for several hours while the crimes were happening.
Stephens had driven from his home in Kentucky, about 500 miles away, to pick up the teenager from school and take him to a restaurant and then a hotel. Court documents describe the “inappropriate act” that took place at this spot.
The girl’s parents found her unlocked cellphone, which she wasn’t meant to have. This made the situation public. When the police looked at this phone, they found messages that Stephens had been sending to the teenager on Instagram and a social media app called Wakie. The police acted quickly after these findings were made public.
Investigator M. Hughes and Sergeant J. Casson were very important in finding out what really happened with the girls and Stephens. They saw that the girl and Stephens had been talking and sending inappropriate pictures to each other for a few months before the event.
After warrants were filed for Stephens’ arrest, the police found him in Ohio. Stephens told the police that he did both the “act” and the sending of inappropriate pictures to the child.
After being caught, Stephens was charged and is now being held in jail on a $365,000 bond. In order to keep his bond, he has to give up his passport and stay away from the victim in any way. Numerous people in the community are worried about the case, and parents are being asked to be more watchful over their kids’ internet activities.
Sergeant Casson stressed how important it is for parents to keep an eye on their kids’ social media use, pointing out how hard it is to manage online friendships these days. The Lauderdale County School System is aware of what happened and is helping with the investigation, but they haven’t said anything else in public.
