A 14-year-old student and a 42-year-old staff member have been identified as the victims of the Wisconsin school shooting

The two people killed in the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, December 16, have been identified as students and staff members.

According to a news release issued by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday, December 18, and obtained by PEOPLE, the victims have been named as Erin M. West, 42, and Rubi Patricia Vergara, 14.

Preliminary autopsy results suggest that both persons were pronounced dead at the site due to “homicidal firearm-related trauma.”

According to her obituary, Vergara, a freshman at Abundant Life Christian School, was a “avid reader, loved art, singing, and playing keyboard in the family worship band.” “She shared a special bond with her beloved pets, Ginger (cat) and Coco (dog),” according to the funeral announcement.

Vergara was a substitute coordinator, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and The New York Times, citing a personnel directory.

The shooter has been identified as 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, also known as “Samantha.” The youngster is accused of opening fire with a handgun in the school’s study hall, killing a staff member one student and injuring six others before turning her weapon on herself.

According to the medical examiner, Rupnow was pronounced dead at a local hospital after the incident. Preliminary autopsy results reveal that she died as a consequence of “firearm-related trauma,” and further testing is underway.

The incident also resulted in the hospitalization of six students. Two of the injured were reported in critical condition with life-threatening injuries shortly after the incident, while the other four were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the four were released on Monday evening, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Authorities have not firmly established a motive, but Rupnow’s family is working with the investigation, and law enforcement has investigated her home, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes stated in a recent press conference.

In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Wednesday, Barnes also stated that police had no evidence that Rupnow was targeting a specific person.
