Bangor woman pleads guilty to manslaughter after killing boyfriend

Bangor — A Bangor woman accused with manslaughter in her boyfriend’s murder changed her plea from not guilty to guilty in court on Monday.

A judge then sentenced 20-year-old Olivia Babin to 20 years in jail, with all but 10 years suspended, which means she will serve 10 years.

Babin was accused of fatally shooting Daniel Ford Coates, 24, in April.

According to prosecutors, Babin snatched Ford Coates’ firearm from his bedroom and removed the magazine to scare him and two others. Babin allegedly adjusted it so that it appeared unloaded and held it to his head jokingly before pressing the trigger.

They then accused her of throwing the revolver into a nearby creek and changing clothing before returning to the scene to contact 911 many minutes later.

Babin addressed members of her own and Ford Coates’ families in court, stating that she accepts full responsibility for her acts.

Several of Ford Coates’ loved ones also spoke, describing how the loss has affected them.

Babin’s sentence will include six years of probation.
