A fiery head-on collision on Highway 43 claims a second victim

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. — A second person was killed in a head-on collision on State Highway 43 this weekend.

Dorbina Nithan, 52, of Springfield, was verified as the second fatality by the Newton County Coroner. The Missouri Highway Patrol verified that she died on November 3 at Mercy Hospital.

Linda Johnson, 77, of Jay, died in the crash as well.

Just before 8 p.m., a double death crash happened on State Highway 43 about six miles south of Joplin.

Nithan’s automobile was going north on Highway 43 when it crossed into the southbound lane, colliding with Johnson’s vehicle and starting a fire. Johnson was pronounced dead on the spot, according to the patrol.

Bonnie Stenzel, Johnson’s 71-year-old passenger from Jay, was seriously injured, according to troopers.

The patrol claimed that Nithan’s 60-year-old male passenger, also from Springfield, suffers minor injuries. The patrol hasn’t revealed his name.
