A Missouri lithium battery recycling plant exploded, but no one was hurt

A dramatic video captures the moment an explosion rocked a big battery-recycling business in Fredericktown, Missouri, after a fire broke out on Wednesday, October 30.

Jacob Armes’ video shows smoke streaming from the structure before a massive explosion, which is followed by a smaller explosion.

The incident started at a lithium-ion battery production plant owned by Critical Mineral Recovery.

According to the company’s website, the 225,000-square-foot plant “recycles lithium-ion-battery-related materials from battery manufacturers, automotive OEMs, battery dealers, recyclers, and processors worldwide,” and it is “one of the largest lithium-ion battery processing facilities in the world.”

The Fredericktown Fire Department stated it was responding, while the Bismarck Fire Protection District said it was offering assistance.

The intense smoke from the fire forced Madison County officials to issue evacuation orders in one part of Fredericktown. Other neighborhood neighbors were warned to stay indoors.

No casualties were reported.
