A New York State policeman was shot on Long Island during a traffic encounter

A New York State trooper was shot in the leg while conducting a traffic stop on a Long Island parkway Wednesday night, according to sources and police.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 17, according to state police and sources.

According to accounts, the trooper pulled over a black Dodge Charger and was shot by a suspect inside.

The wounded trooper was transported to Nassau County University Medical Center in stable condition.

According to sources, the Charger’s driver fled the scene, and police were hunting for the vehicle early Thursday.
