The speed limit on 20th Street near the High School in Joplin has been reduced

After Monday’s city council meeting, a new school zone will start right away on 20th Street in Joplin. Drivers will need to slow down.

From now on, you can only go 20 miles per hour on 20th Street by Joplin High School. People in the area say they like the change.

Cheyenne Hall, a bartender at Pink Mornings Coffee Shop, says, “Every time I get to work, someone gets really close behind me.” “I really have to slow down to make a sharp turn, and they are right on my tail.”

People who live there think the change is needed because speeding is a problem that keeps happening.

“A lot of people are playing on their phones,” he says. “Having that a little more enforced would be safer for the kids.”

Also in favour of the change is Emma Miller, owner of Avery Salon, who says it will make young drivers feel better. But she thinks the road is too crazy.

“A lot of times, I just take the back way because I don’t want to deal with turning across traffic,” he says.

People in the community agree that the change may be annoying for some, but they think it’s for the best.

“Most people I’ve heard from are pretty much fine with the change,” Miller says.
