CLIFTON, Maine – Two people died in an accident near Clifton on Wednesday morning, according to officials.
According to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, two automobiles collided head-on on Route 180 (Rebel Hill Rd.) around 10 a.m.
According to reports, a larger vehicle moving south crossed over the middle lane at high speed, colliding with a smaller vehicle traveling north.
Officials say the larger vehicle rolled several times before catching fire, while the smaller vehicle was thrown off the road.
The drivers were the only persons in the vehicles, and both were pronounced dead on the site, according to officials.
Officials are not publishing the names of those slain at this time.
“This is a difficult stretch of road, a secondary road, with little traffic, but it is winding and hilly,” said Penobscot County Sheriff Troy Morton. “Deputies have recently been out here performing traffic enforcement for that purpose, specifically fast vehicles. We have a partnership and a contract with the Town of Clifton to come out here and increase traffic enforcement on this route.”
The crash is still under investigation.
The road is expected to be closed for several hours.
